A New Chapter in Riyadh: Blending Business with Personal Discovery

Home Blog

Introduction: Navigating Uncharted Waters

Here I am in Riyadh, settling into a month-long business assignment, the first since several life-changing events. It’s my first deep dive into an extended work trip post-COVID, with a new company, and as a ”newly” (six years and counting) married man. It’s a landscape that’s new to me, yet it holds the familiarity of family ties.

Comfort in the Familiar

The flavors of Riyadh are like echoes of home, thanks to my wife’s Arabic heritage. Each dish is a blend of the familiar and the exotic, making every meal an experience that connects me back to the life we share. It’s comforting, this taste of home in a foreign land.

Conversing with a Few Cherished Words

Though my Arabic is limited, each phrase I use builds bridges. A simple greeting or a thank you can go a long way, transforming transactions into meaningful exchanges. It’s remarkable how just a few words can enhance the quality of everyday adventures.

Guidance from Experienced Colleagues

My colleagues, who’ve frequented Saudi Arabia for years, have provided invaluable insight. Their stories paint a picture of a nation that’s evolving, embracing new ways while cherishing its rich heritage—a balance that’s both exciting and profound.

Conclusion: Embracing the Journey, Anticipating the Return

As my first month in Riyadh comes to an end, I’m taking stock of all the experiences I’ve gathered. It’s been an eye-opening chapter, one filled with new knowledge and insights, both professional and personal. While I’m eager to return to the comfort of my home and reunite with my wife, I also recognize the value of the work still left to do here. Riyadh has shown me a different side to a culture I thought I knew, and there’s much more to learn on my subsequent visits. Until then, I look forward to the familiar embrace of home, carrying with me the stories and lessons of Saudi Arabia.
